Bartleby sells students 24/7 homework, study and writing help on one subscription. Idealite contributed web engineering to its student-facing platform.
{ Project Overview }
About the Project
Bartleby is a subscription study-help service for college and high-school students, owned by Barnes & Noble Education from 2017 and by Learneo, the parent of Course Hero and QuillBot, since 2023. It offers more than 10 million step-by-step textbook and homework solutions, expert help on demand, a math solver, and writing tools for outlines, citations, grammar and plagiarism checks. The business model is simple to state and hard to run. Free pages and writing tools bring in students who are stuck, often late at night when campus help is closed. They try the service for a low first-week price, then stay subscribed only if it keeps saving them time and helping them understand the work. Every part of the platform has to serve that path from first visit to renewal. Idealite contributed web engineering to the student-facing platform behind that subscription.

{ How We Built It }
Development Process
How the Bartleby engagement came together, step by step.
- 01
Learn the Business
Started from how Bartleby earns: students arrive through free pages and tools, try the service cheaply, and stay subscribed while it keeps helping.
- 02
Contribute to the Platform
Contributed web engineering to the student-facing platform, fitting the work to the client's existing product and priorities.
- 03
Keep Students in View
Weighed changes against how students find help and decide whether to subscribe.
- 04
Hand Over the Work
Handed completed work to the client's team to review and release on its own schedule.

Objectives
- Explain, Not Just Answer: Give students worked, step-by-step solutions tied to their own textbook so they can follow the method.
- One Plan for Study: Keep homework solutions, expert answers and writing tools under a single student subscription.
- Grow Paying Subscribers: Move students from free pages and tools into a low-cost trial and on to a paid plan.
- Keep Subscribers Renewing: Give trial users enough ongoing value to keep paying month after month.
- Add Engineering Capacity: Bring extra web engineering to the student-facing platform behind the subscription.
Requirements
- Work had to fit the existing student-facing platform and the client's own product direction.
- Changes had to protect the subscription path: a low-cost first week, then monthly renewal that students can cancel any time.
- Textbook solutions had to stay organized by edition, chapter, section and problem so students can find their exact question.
- Homework solutions, expert questions and writing tools had to work together as one subscription.
- Pages had to work for students on desktop and mobile.
- The platform had to serve large numbers of students at once.
Challenges & solutions
- Students often get stuck late at night, when professors and campus tutoring are unavailable, so help has to be reachable at any hour.
- Textbooks skip steps, so solutions have to be worked step by step and matched to the student's own edition, chapter and section.
- Free pages and writing tools bring in visitors, but the business only works if they start a trial and stay subscribed.
- The low-cost trial lasts one week, so students have to see enough value quickly to keep paying monthly.
- Homework, studying and writing are sold as one plan, so the products have to feel like one service rather than separate tools.
Outcomes
- Bartleby had additional web engineering capacity for the platform students use for homework, study and writing help.
- Engineering work was tied to the subscription business: how students find help, start a trial and choose to stay.
- The client's team kept ownership of the product and its releases.
